    A balance of many kinds of reading is essential for all readers. All the passages in this book are intended to be motivating and interesting for third- and-fourth grade students, but they are written for readers one to two grade levels behind. Effective materials for struggling readers have their own textual integrity: realistic characters, readable and convincing text, and a deep sense of the readers' interests and needs.
